French Director Maurice Pialat to Receive Major Retrospective at Museum of the Moving Image
The Museum of Moving Image has announced a major retrospective for the lifework of French film director Maurice Pialat, which will run from October 16 – November 1. The career of late filmmaker Maurice Pialat (1925-2003) has been justly celebrated in his native France, but his legacy is unfairly underappreciated in the United States. The Pialat Retrospective will include all ten of his features in 35mm, in addition to his 1971 TV miniseries “La maison des bois,” and several of his short films.
Pialat emerged shortly after the French New Wave with his emotional, raw and sometimes autobiographical films. Pialat ended up directing some of the most significant French films of the 20th century, including “À nos amours,” “We Won’t Grow Old Together” and “Van Gogh.” Other films on the slate include four collaborations with Gérard Depardieu — “Loulou,” “Police,” Palme d’Or-winner “Under the Sun of Satan” and “Le Garçu” — as well as rarely shown titles such as “Graduate First (Passe ton bac d’abord…)” and “The Mouth Agape.”
“The Museum’s Pialat retrospective shines a light on a director who deserves to be better known to American audiences, especially at a time when his influence can be so clearly seen in the work of contemporary French directors who are finding international success,” said MoMI’s Chief Curator David Schwartz.
Following its run at the Museum of the Moving Image, the Pialat retrospective will travel to the TIFF Cinemateque in Toronto, the Harvard Film Archive and the Center for Moving Image Arts at Bard College. For a complete schedule and for more information on the Pialat retrospective, head here.
