Knate Lee, known for producing the Johnny Knoxville-led “Jackass 3D” and “Bad Grandpa,” has stepped behind the camera to direct his first feature film “Cardboard Boxer,” starring Thomas Haden Church.

The drama – which appears to have skipped the festival circuit – centers on Willie (Church), a homeless man who is paid by two rich teens to fight other men for cash and then struggles to escape the dark world he’s gotten himself into. With the help of a new pen-pal and a trusting new friend (Terrence Howard), he hopes to turn his life around.

Written by Lee, “Cardboard Boxer” also co-stars “Narcos’s” Boyd Holbrook, Rhys Wakefield, and musician Macy Gray. Check out the first trailer below.

Church — poised to break out after “Sideways” (more than a decade ago) — is soon to star opposite Sarah Jessica Parker in HBO’s dramedy “Divorce,” premiering October 9. The Oscar nominee can also be seen in Kevin Tent’s upcoming film “Crash Pad,” starring Domhnall Gleeson and Christina Applegate.

As for the “Empire” actor, “Cardboard Boxer” marks Howard’s second major feature since taking on the role of Lucious Lyon. Back in April, he was seen in the Vince Vaughn, Hailee Steinfeld-led drama “Term Life” and will be reprising his role of Quentin in Malcolm D. Lee’s comedy “The Best Man Wedding.”

“Cardboard Boxer” will be available On Demand on September 13 and be released in theaters on September 19, via WellGo.
