Four newcomers have broken into the ranks of nominated cinematographers this year: “Arrival” DP Bradford Young, the first African-American to land an Oscar nomination in this category, Swedish Linus Sandgren (“La La Land”), James Laxton  (“Moonlight”), and Australian Greig Fraser (“Lion”). All are vying against veteran and two-time-nominee Rodrigo Prieto (Martin Scorsese’s “Silence”).

The favorite is Sandgren for his innovative and fluidly choreographed 35 mm camera work on “La La Land.”
