‘Creative Block’ Features a Bilingual, Artist-Based Approach to Combating Depression

Logline: A puppeteer battles depression by going on a surreal journey to France to meet her artistic hero – whom she is convinced holds the key to her artistic resurgence.
Elevator Pitch:
A short surreal film, “Creative Block” follows Claire, a young artist and puppet-maker in New York. One day, she suffers a rupture in her creativity, leading to depression. She becomes convinced the only cure is the art of another: Thibaut, a figure skater in Paris. Fixated on the artistry of this athlete she only knows from TV, Claire impulsively goes to Paris herself. There, she discovers the unexpected: Thibaut, too, is suffering from creative block. Now it’s up to Claire to find the road back to her own creativity: a road strewn with disappointments, revelations … and balloons.

About the Film:
I wanted to make a film about a creative person with depression – something extremely common yet not widely discussed or dramatized. I wanted it to be bilingual, set in NYC and Paris, since those cities and their languages have shaped me as a storyteller.
At its heart, “Creative Block” is about the loss of one’s identity, as caused by depression. It’s about the underlying drive to get that identity back even when you feel no motivation. And it’s about believing someone else can give it back to you, when ultimately your only chance at salvation lies in yourself.
Current Status: We are in production and fundraising. We have shot the France-set portion of the film on location in Paris.
