Directors Guild Announces 2010 Award Nominees
The Directors Guild of America have announced the nominations for their 63rd annual awards. The lineup consisted of the expected four – “The Social Network”‘s David Fincher, “Inception”‘s Christopher Nolan, “Black Swan”‘s Darren Aronofsky and “The King’s Speech”‘s Tom Hooper – with “The Fighter”‘s David O. Russell taking the contested final slot over “True Grit”‘s Joel and Ethan Coen, “Winter’s Bone”‘s Debra Granik, “The Town”‘s Ben Affleck and “127 Hours”‘s Danny Boyle, among others.
It is the first feature film nomination for Russell, Aronofsky and Hooper (though Hooper had been nominated for his TV work on “John Adams”), while Nolan and Fincher have each been nominated before (Nolan for both “Memento” and “The Dark Knight,” Fincher for “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”).
The winner will be named at the 63rd Annual DGA Awards Dinner on Saturday, January 29, 2011, at the Grand Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland. Only six times since the DGA Award began in 1949 has the winner not won the Academy Award; in 1968 (Anthony Harvey won the DGA for “The Lion in Winter,” Carol Reed won the Oscar for directing Oliver!); 1972 (Francis Ford Coppola won the DGA for “The Godfather,” Bob Fosse won the Oscar for directing “Cabaret”); 1985 (Steven Spielberg won the DGA for “The Color Purple,” Sydney Pollack won the Oscar for directing “Out of Africa”); 1995 (Ron Howard won the DGA for “Apollo 13,” Mel Gibson won the Oscar for directing “Braveheart”); 2000 (Ang Lee won the DGA for “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” Steven Soderbergh won the Oscar for directing “Traffic”); and 2002 (Rob Marshall won the DGA for “Chicago, Roman Polanski won the Oscar for directing “The Pianist”).

This is Mr. Fincher’s second DGA Feature Film Award nomination. He was previously nominated for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button in 2008. He previously won the DGA Commercial Award for Speed Chain (Nike), Gamebreakers (Nikegridiron.com), and Beauty for Sale (Xelibri Phones) in 2003 and was nominated in that category again in 2008.
