Check out the new trailer for “The Diary of a Teenage Girl,” a dark horse hit from the 2015 Sundance Film Festival which follows the illicit affair between a 15-year-old girl and her mother’s boyfriend in 1976 San Francisco. Wrapped up in twee packaging, the film is a realistic and unsettling exploration of female adolescent sexuality.

“The Diary of a Teenage Girl” is based on the graphic novel by Phoebe Gloeckner and marks actress Marielle Heller‘s feature film debut as a writer/director. British newcomer Bel Powley stars in the film alongside Alexander Skarsgård, Christopher Meloni, and Kristen Wiig.

In case you’re not already convinced this is a must-see, here’s the official synopsis: “Like most teenage girls, Minnie Goetze (Bel Powley) is longing for love, acceptance and a sense of purpose in the world. Minnie begins a complex love affair with her mother’s (Kristen Wiig) boyfriend, “the handsomest man in the world,” Monroe Rutherford (Alexander Skarsgård). What follows is a sharp, funny and provocative account of one girl’s sexual and artistic awakening, without judgment.”

“The Diary of a Teenage Girl” opens in select theaters August 7.
