Watch: ‘Rough Draft With Reza Aslan’ Reveals Norman Lear’s Favorite Character

There’s nothing quite like the bond between an artist and his body of work, especially when those very projects go on to become icons themselves. Especially so, probably, when your name is Norman Lear.

In a landscape of talk shows that follow the traditionally formulaic formats, Reza Aslan decides to switch gears on “Rough Draft With Reza Aslan.” In this five-part weekly series, he narrows his focus on extensive conversations with some of our most widely celebrated writers. Aslan trades in gimmicks and gags for lively yet intimate talks about the writer and the writer’s life, with legendary writer/producer Norman Lear as his first guest. 

With Lear on the hot seat, the pair discuss which of Lear’s most beloved characters is his personal favorite. A writer having to pick his favorite character is like a parent trying to pick a favorite child, and Lear understandably has difficulty answering the question at first. He eventually caves — spoiler alert: he chooses Maude.
