Leonardo DiCaprio to Star as Music Producer Sam Phillips in Biopic
Leonardo DiCaprio‘s next role will take him to the birth of rock ’n’ roll. Deadline reports that the “Revenant” Oscar winner is set to star in the film about music producer Sam Phillips, known for launching the career of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Ike Turner and Jerry Lee Lewis.
Based on Peter Guralnick’s 2015 biography “Sam Phillips: The Man Who Invented Rock ‘N’ Roll,” the Paramount project will chronicle the life of the disc-jockey-turned-producer who founded the Memphis-based Sun Studio and became an integral part in the emergence and development of rock and roll and rockabilly in the 1950s. No writer or director is attached at this moment.

DiCaprio is producing the film with Jennifer Davisson under their Appian Way banner, along with Mick Jagger, Victoria Pearman, Steve Bing, Ian Montone, Rick Yorn, and Guralnick.
Appian and Paramount have a handful of other projects in the works including a limited TV series based on A. Scott Berg’s Pulitzer-winning Charles Lindbergh biography, an adaptation of Kayla Olson’s novel “Sandcastle Empire,” and recently signed on to develop a Captain Planet movie.
DiCaprio recently produced the climate change documentary “Before The Flood,” which is now in theaters and will air globally on the National Geographic Channel on October 30. “The Ivory Game,” which he executive produced, premieres on Netflix on November 4.
