Richard Linklater's Much-Loved 'Boyhood' Will Open BAMcinemaFest

The New York premiere of Richard Linklater‘s acclaimed new film “Boyhood” will open the 2014 BAMcinemaFest. The Festival, which celebrates the best of American independent cinema, will take place June 18th – June 29th.

“Boyhood” has been 12 years in the making, spanning the real lives of its actors, and has already received very favorable reviews and awards during its film festival circuit run. Indiewire’s own Eric Kohn gave the film a glowing review, rewarding it an “A” and writing, “Epic in scope yet unassuming throughout, Linklater’s incredibly involving chronicle marks an unprecedented achievement in fictional storytelling.” The Playlist talked to Linklater about the making of the film in this interview.

Shot between 2002 and 2013, the film is another example of Linklater’s unique mixture of experimentation and classical narrative, with elements of realism — long takes, improvisation, and location shooting — melding with his signature dreamlike, poetic style. It takes the real-time structure of the “Before” trilogy to a new level, with the progress we see between the nine years separating each of those films taking place within the span of one film. It will open July 11th in limited release.

“We are ecstatic and honored to open BAMcinemaFest with Boyhood, another bold achievement by Richard Linklater and a film with the emotional power and aesthetic ambition of American independent cinema at its best,” says Gabriele Caroti, director of BAMcinématek. “Linklater is a pioneer and a strong influence on countless young filmmakers today, and Boyhood is the perfect way to unveil our sixth edition of the festival—a showcase for these emerging artists. We’re also thrilled to partner with IFC Films once again for opening night.”
