‘The Purge’ TV Series Being Developed by Series Mastermind James DeMonaco
James DeMonaco‘s increasingly popular — and increasingly timely — “Purge” film series now looks to be getting into the television game. Cinema Blend recently hopped on the phone with filmmaker DeMonaco, who created the series and has written and directed all three films, to chat about the home video release of latest entry in the series, the frighteningly prescient “The Purge: Election Year,” and talk eventually turned to the possibility that DeMonaco’s series could turn to the small screen.
Turns out, not only is DeMonaco down with the idea, he’s actively working on a “Purge” television series. When asked about the possibility of taking “The Purge” to TV, DeMonaco told the outlet, “Yes! Not an anthology… I guess kind of an anthology — more of an interwoven anthology. They came to me about a TV show, my idea is that you do six or seven storylines. And I would kind of intercut them, use flashbacks.” DeMonaco also shared that his concept for a “Purge” series is best suited for a cable outfit — they do love their anthology series — and would play out over 10 episodes (likely meaning 10 episodes).
DeMonaco also shared he’s compelled by the possibilities of a series because it would allow him to further explore the mindsets of various “purgers” and the reasons why they participate each year. While the three “Purge” films have been more focused on good people — read: people not committing crime for fun! — surviving the night, a TV series might flip that script.
He told Cinema Blend, “The one thing you really can’t do on the films is, just because of mere real estate and time, is you can’t get into the nuance and complexity that would drive someone to commit a terrible act on this night. Whether it’s revenge or out of passion, but what might be interesting in a TV show is with a flashback narrative, if you start on Purge Night but you go back to show how people have gotten to where they are.”
And we might not have to wait too long to see the series, as DeMonaco told the outlet they are “far ahead on the TV front” and “we’re talking about deals right now, money is being spoken about. Things like that. So I think it’s being taken very seriously from the higher-ups who obviously dictate everything.”
“The Purge: Election Year” hits Blu-ray and DVD on October 4.
