‘Atlanta’ Soundtrack: Listen to This Playlist of Every Song From Donald Glover’s Groundbreaking FX Series

“Atlanta” is nothing short of a cultural achievement with the awards and critical acclaim to back it up. In Season 1, Donald Glover wanted viewers to feel what it’s like to be black, while in Season 2, his brother Stephen Glover emphasized that the show would attempt to capture the essence of life in Atlanta.

While the FX series has tackled those goals narratively and thematically, with deft insight and biting humor, “Atlanta” also brings home the feel of the town on a more visceral level as well. Shooting on location at familiar haunts but through a filmmaker’s eye gives the city of Atlanta the spotlight in a way that hasn’t been seen before. Working in concert with the visuals is the show’s soundtrack that represents the diversity of musical influences in the city.

On the FX comedy, Donald Glover plays Earn Marks, a frequently broke and homeless Princeton dropout who becomes the manager for his cousin, up-and-coming rapper Alfred “Paper Boi” Miles (Brian Tyree Henry). Alfred’s right-hand man Darius (Lakeith Stanfield) and Earn’s sometimes girlfriend Van Keefer (Zazie Beetz) are also along for the ride.

As a bonus, Pigeons & Planes also added a couple of songs heard in the early trailers for the season, which include the haunting “Too Fast” by Sonder and Yellow Days’ “Gap in the Clouds.” The soundtrack ranges from highlighting local Atlanta favorites like Yung Bans and Texas rapper Tay-K to classics from Curtis Mayfield and The Delfonics.

Missing from the soundtrack is the rousing song, “High Patrol” by Eric Caissy that played just as Earn raced Michael Vick (see below). Also missing (although maybe fans aren’t “missing” it at all) is the acoustic rap cover of “Paper Boi” by real YouTube star Bryce Hitchcock, who plays Amber on the show.

“Atlanta” airs on Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET on FX.
