One of the breakout directors of the 2014 Sundance Film Festival thanks to “The Skeleton Twins,” Craig Johnson finally returns to theaters next year with his third and most star-studded feature, “Wilson.” Adapted by Daniel Clowes from his graphic novel of the same name, the comedy-drama stars Woody Harrelson as a neurotic loner and Laura Dern as his ex-wife, and if we learned anything from Johnson’s last feature, it’s that he knows how to wring out all the laughs and heartbreak from familial relationships.

The official synopsis reads: “Harrelson stars as Wilson, a lonely, neurotic and hilariously honest middle-aged misanthrope who reunites with his estranged wife and gets a shot at happiness when he learns he has a teenage daughter (Isabella Amara) he has never met.  In his uniquely outrageous and slightly twisted way, he sets out to connect with her.” Judy Greer and Cheryl Hines co-star.

The film rights have been with Fox Searchlight Pictures for quite some time, and the company originally courted Alexander Payne for the project. The trailer is full of the kind of middle-aged masculine identity crisis that fuels the humor and tragedy of Payne’s best work, and that delicate balance of emotions is exactly what Johnson looks to be tapping into.

“Wilson” opens March 24, 2017. Watch the new trailer below.
