‘Tanna’ Receives Five Aussie Oscar Nominations, Including Best Picture
A year after its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, Bentley Dean and Martin Butler’s “Tanna” opened to strong reviews last month. In addition to being selected as Australia’s submission to the Academy Awards in the Foreign-Language Film category, it’s now received five nominations from the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA), also known as the Aussie Oscars.

“Tanna” got nods in the Best Film, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Sound and Best Original Music Score categories. The first film shot entirely in the South Pacific nation of Vanuatu, it’s performed by the people of Yakel in their native Nauvhal language. Mel Gibson’s “Hacksaw Ridge” leads the AACTA nominations with 13, including Best Picture and Director.

Other notable Oscar submissions include “The Ardennes” (Belgium), “Neruda” (Chile), “Elle” (France), “Toni Erdmann” (Germany), “Chevalier” (Greece), “The Salesman” (Iran), “Fire at Sea” (Italy), “Ma’Rosa” (Philippines), “Sieranevada” (Romania), “The Age of Shadows” (South Korea) and “Under the Shadows” (United Kingdom), among many others.
