Jennifer Lopez‘s next TV role will take her from NYPD detective in “Shades of Blue” to drug lord in HBO‘s new film about the infamous Colombian drug dealer Griselda Blanco.

According to Variety, the movie focuses on the rise and fall of Blanco, the drug lord known as “The Cocaine Godmother” who revolutionized the U.S. drug trade during the 1970s and 1980s and became the most powerful female cartel member of all time.

“I’ve been fascinated by the life of this corrupt and complicated woman for many years,” Lopez said. “The idea of teaming with HBO felt like the perfect fit for finally bringing Griselda’s story to life.”

Lopez will serve as executive producer via her Nuyorican Productions banner alongside Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, Benny Medina, plus LBI Entertainment’s Julie Yorn and Rick Yorn. Alex Pettyfer, Nuyorican’s Priscilla Porianda and LBI’s Patrick Walmsley are co-executive producers.

It has been estimated that Blanco was responsible for up to 200 murders while transporting cocaine from Colombia to the U.S. She was arrested in 1985 and then deported back to her native country. She died in 2012 after being shot in a drive-by shooting.
