‘Edge of Tomorrow’: Doug Liman Also Wants You to Call His Time-Bending Actioner ‘Live Die Repeat’
In a case of call it whatever you want, just call it, filmmaker Doug Liman has given himself over to one of modern’s cinema weirdest retconnings: the title of his time-bending alien action outing “Edge of Tomorrow.” Although the Tom Cruise- and Emily Blunt-starring film was released as “Edge of Tomorrow” in 2014, subsequent marketing material and even home video releases have played up a tagline-turned-unofficial title: “Live Die Repeat.” With Liman and Cruise hoping to reunite for a sequel, the question of just what the heck this movie should be called is once again amusing, if not topical.
Liman, it seems, has his own ideas. He’s a Live Die Repeater, and he’d like you to be, too.
In a new interview with Yahoo! Movies, Liman explains that he’d like to rebrand the entire franchise under “Live Die Repeat,” the film’s original title. It would certainly help the tentative sequel name — “Live Die Repeat and Repeat” — make a touch more sense. “That was an epic war between me and Warner Bros. that I lost,” Liman told the outlet about his original battle to title the first film “Live Die Repeat.” He’s hoping to win the larger fight, though.
“I’m hoping to rebrand it fully as’ Live Die Repeat,’ and the sequel will be inspired from that, whether it’s ‘Live Die Repeat and Repeat’ or something else,” he said. “Tom and I make movies for the long term, and I really think about getting the title settled for posterity.”
Liman also added that, when it comes to “Live Die Repeat and Repeat” (or however this title shakes out), he’s dedicated to telling the best possible story. “Normally there are financial decisions behind making a sequel, but with this, it was just about us coming up with a story,” he told Yahoo! Movies. “Really, it’s not a world I was eager to go back to, because dealing with time travel can make your head hurt. But there was so much affection from fans of the movie — more than any of my other movies! — that Tom and I felt that we owed it to ourselves to at least think about what a sequel could be.”
The filmmaker also explained to the outlet that, because of the wonders of time travel, the film’s sequel will spin its most mind-bending element in a new way, and “will start off as a continuation that reverses the clock, rather than moving it forward.” As he said, “It picks up where the last one left off, but then we go backwards in time. I love it way more than the story of the original film.”
