All Governments Lie
"All Governments Lie"

At its best, journalism should have an adversarial relationship with power, constantly questioning or combatting it in a relentless pursuit of the truth. Unfortunately, modern media conglomerates have a vested interest in making money over uncovering lies, and thus are willing to be spokespeople for the powerful instead of the ones who hold their feet to the fire. Fred Peabody’s new documentary “All Governments Lie: Truth, Deception, and the Spirit of I.F. Stone” takes on the inherent flaws of the modern news media and how they are increasingly reluctant to investigate or criticize government policies.

In “All Governments Lie,” Peabody explores the legacy of I.F. Stone, whose groundbreaking reporting filled his tiny 4-page newsletter from 1953 to 1971. He inspired many of those changing the face of journalism who are featured in “All Governments Lie,” like journalists such as Amy Goodman (Democracy Now!), Glenn Greenwald (The Intercept), Matt Taibbi (Rolling Stone), and many others. Watch an exclusive trailer and see the poster below.

In the film, Peabody’s cameras also follow modern journalists as they uncover government and corporate secrets, such as Rolling Stone contributing editor Mike Taibbi covering the 2016 U.S. primary in New Hampshire, Amy Goodman and Nermeen Shaikh prepping a show in the New York newsroom of “Democracy Now!”, and independent journalist John Carlos Frey in his yearlong investigation into the shocking cover up of mass graves of undocumented migrants. He also obtains unprecedented behind-the-scenes access at The Intercept, where co-founders Glenn Greenwald and Jeremy Scahill describe their many recent scoops. The film also features interviews with veterans such as Noam Chomsky, Ralph Nader, Chris Hedges, and Carl Bernstein who weigh in on how I.F. Stone influenced their work.
