Project of the Day: ‘Butterfly’

Tweetable Logline: A lonely probation officer struggles to write a report on a hot-tempered young woman whose dark past threatens to consume her.
Elevator Pitch: Leonard Doyle is faced with the difficult task of writing a probation report on Teri, a hot-tempered graphic designer with convictions for minor theft. A clash of personalities combined with Leonard’s desire to unearth the roots of her behavior leads to an escalation in conflict as Teri rejects his methods and uses his personal failings to keep him at arms length. As patience runs out, Leonard makes one final attempt to break through to her; Teri’s acceptance or rejection of his helping hand will either release her from her dark past, or condemn her to continue in her downward spiral.
Production Team:
Cathal Black has directed and is producing this featurette. A veteran of the Irish film industry, his film ‘Korea’, based on a John McGahern story, won the Jury Prize at the Amiens Film Festival and the Asta Nielsen Award at the Copenhagen Film Festival, and came runner-up for best film at the Seattle Film Festival in 1995. In 2007 Cathal directed ‘Learning Gravity (aka The Undertaking)’ which was officially selected for the Telluride Film Festival, the Cologne Film Festival, and the San Francisco and LA Irish Festival. It won the silver trophy at the New York Television Festival, The Michigan Award at the Michael Moore Film Festival and was nominated for an IFTA. Most recently Cathal produced acclaimed short ‘Irish Folk Furniture’, which won the Best Animated Short Film award at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival.
Irish playwright Neil Donnelly wrote the screenplay for Butterfly, adapted from his own stage play.
Denis Conway, a veteran of both the Irish stage and screen, plays Leonard Doyle. Denis’s previous screen credits include: The Wind That Shakes the Barley, Garage, Alexander, Quirke.
Antonia Campbell-Hughes, one of Europe’s brightest rising stars, plays Teri. Antonia’s previous work includes: BAFTA winner Kelly + Victor, The Other Side of Sleep, 3096 Days, Bright Star.
Fionn Comerford served as director of photography. Fionn’s previous credits include: Penny Dreadful, Vikings, Harry Potter & the Order of the Phoenix.
Tony Cranstoun will edit. Tony won a BAFTA for his work on The Royle Family. Other credits include: I Give It A Year, Death of a Superhero, Perrier’s Bounty.
About the Production: The team aim to create an engaging and immersive experience in the telling of this richly layered story, which revolves around two very different and complex characters whose time together has the potential to profoundly change their lives. Filming took place over the course of a week in Dublin, Ireland – personally financed by Cathal Black – and the finished film is expected to have a run-time of between 30 and 40 minutes.
