After the world premiere of his new film “Don’t Think Twice” at South by Southwest, Mike Birbiglia was asked when others would be able to see it. “I can’t tell you,” he replied, “but I can tell you that I love this film and I will be hand-delivering this film across the country to make sure everyone can see it.” Now the details are known: “Don’t Think Twice” will begin its theatrical run in New York on July 22 before expanding nationwide. What’s more, the writer/director/star will hit the road in June on a pre-release “Improv Across America” bus tour making stops in 20 cities across the country in the lead-up to the film’s release.
“Don’t Think Twice” concerns a well-known improv troupe in New York whose members begin to realize that not all of them will be making it big — though at least one will. Among its cast are Keegan-Michael Key, Gillian Jacobs, Kate Micucci, Tami Sagher and Birbiglia himself. He previously directed “Sleepwalk With Me,” which premiered at Sundance in 2012.
The Film Arcade is partnering with Birbiglia and producer Ira Glass for what it describes as an “aggressive” theatrical release. An initial round of dates for “Improv Across America” — including San Diego on June 2nd, Seattle on June 10th, Boston on June 28th and Chicago on July 12th — has already been announced as well. The tour will include free workshops with improv theaters, pop-up screenings of “Don’t Think Twice” and appearances by Birbiglia, the cast and other guests.
