The 12 year filmmaking process of Richard Linklater‘s “Boyhood” has been thoroughly discussed over the last several weeks and part of what makes the film so incredible is the the way Linklater and editor Sandra Adair seamlessly progressed the narrative throughout those production years.
Instead of taking the easy way out and using title cards, the movie deftly uses music to draw the viewer back in time to pinpoint exactly in what year Mason Jr. (Ellar Coltrane) and his family are living. The effect works wonders in the nostalgia department, and now, thanks to online music service Rdio, each year of “Boyhood” has its own musical playlist featuring the time-marking songs of the film. “Boyhood” is in select theaters now and expands today. Give the “period” music a listen below:

Featuring a compilation of John, Paul, George and Ringo’s post-Beatles solo work, the album’s role in the film is inspired by a real life gift Hawke gave his daughter. Listen to the playlist below and head over to Buzzfeed for more details on Hawke’s gift and his accompanying letter to Mason Jr.
