READ MORE: Sundance: The Crazy Five-Year Story Behind ‘The Wolfpack’
The Angulo Brothers have gotten their official turn in the filmmaker’s chair by collaborating with VICE for their short film, “Mirror Heart.”
The subjects of the Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner, “The Wolfpack,” the brothers surprised audiences with their shocking upbringing and story. Living in isolation in the Lower East Side of Manhattan under the watchful eye of their strict father, who wouldn’t let them leave the house, their only access to the outside world was through movies, which they would recreate with low-budget productions of their favorite films.
According to the brothers, who offer some insight into the making of the short in VICE’s behind-the-scenes footage, the film was inspired by directors like David Lynch and Steven Soderberg. The film itself is a surrealist culmination of Mukunda’s imaginations since he was a child. Everything from the props, direction and cinematography was done by the Angulo brothers, and the film showcases their talents even more than the doc thanks to a higher production budget and an actual studio to film in.
