“This is not my body, I have to let it go.”

For his first role post-Oscar win for “The Theory of Everything,” Eddie Redmayne is again cast as a famous pioneer. This time around, it’s as Lili Elbe in Tom Hooper‘s “The Danish Girl,” which tells the story of Lili (formerly known as Einar Magnus Andreas Wegener), a transgender woman who was one of the first people to receive sex reassignment surgery. The film co-stars Alicia Vikander as Lili’s wife, along with a cast that includes Amber Heard, Matthias Schoenaerts and Ben Whishaw. The film has been in various states of production for nearly two decades, and is finally hitting the big screen during this awards season.

The film’s official synopsis tells us: “The remarkable love story inspired by the lives of Lili Elbe and Gerda Wegener (portrayed by Academy Award winner Eddie Redmayne [‘The Theory of Everything’] and Alicia Vikander [‘Ex Machina’]), directed by Academy Award winner Tom Hooper (‘The King’s Speech,’ ‘Les Misérables’). Lili and Gerda’s marriage and work evolve as they navigate Lili’s groundbreaking journey as a transgender pioneer.”

“The Danish Girl” will premiere at the Venice International Film Festival and will then go on to screen at the Toronto International Film Festival. It will hit theaters on November 27 and expand out during the month of December.
