Meryl Streep and Mike Nichols Return HBO 'Master Class'

Meryl Streep hasn’t done a ton of singing on screen, but that may be about to change. The grand dame of great acting will star as opera singer Maria Callas in Mike Nichols‘ upcoming adaptation of “Master Class” for HBO.

Mike Nichols has brought many plays to HBO, including “Wit,” starring Emma Thompson, and “Angels in America,” which featured an all-star cast including Streep.

“Master Class,” which according to HBO “was inspired by the legendary master classes that operatic great Maria Callas gave in the early ’70s at the Julliard School” promises to be a more intimate affair than the epicness of “America.” But given the subject matter — a celebration of an iconic artist from a very specific point of view — it fits perfectly into the HBO brand.
