MGM confirmed the director had nabbed the project in May of this year after several months of speculation. Boyle had written a script with his “Trainspotting” co-writer John Hodge. Franchise veterans Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, who scripted all of Craig’s 007 movies as well as Pierce Brosnan entries “The World Is Not Enough” and “Die Another Day,” were originally commissioned to write the screenplay for Bond 25. The duo finished a draft but it was put on hold after Boyle pitched an idea Wilson and Broccoli enjoyed.
The British director most recently directed “T2,” the sequel to his breakout film, “Trainspotting.” The film received somewhat mixed reviews and was a box office disappointment, grossing $2.4 million domestically. He is currently working on an untitled project with “Love Actually” screenwriter Richard Curtis starring Lily James and Kate McKinnon.
A representative for Boyle declined to comment on this story.
