Nicole Holofcener‘s “Enough Said” soared well beyond expectations on its opening weekend, grossing a massive $240,000 from just 4 theaters in New York and Los Angeles (giving it a total of $294,000 since opening Wednesday). That gave the film — which features one of the late James Gandolfini’s final performances opposite the likes of Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Catherine Keener and Toni Collette — a $60,000 per-theater-average, one of the 5 best indie debuts of 2013.

“Nicole seems to have touched a nerve with this film, as is evidenced by the great turnout in NY and LA,” Fox Searchlight‘s Head of Distribution Frank Rodriguez said. “Audiences have been waiting for a well written film for adults, and besides Nicole’s core audience, she seems to be reaching a new set of moviegoers who are discovering and appreciating her work.  We are very happy with the outstanding opening weekend grosses, and while we knew all along that we would do well at the boxoffice,  these figures are beyond our wildest expectations.”

Comparatively, Holofencer’s previous best debut was 2010’s “Please Give,” which grossed $118,123 from 5 theaters for a $23,625 average. That film went on to gross just over $4 million.

“Enough Said” will open 65 new markets on September 27th, while expanding in NY and LA. That should result in an increase in total theatre count to between 180-220 locations, Fox Searchlight said.
