‘A United Kingdom’ Trailer: David Oyelowo and Rosamund Pike Fight For Love & Country
Though we constantly underestimate it, love is a powerful force of nature, even throughout our tempestuous and fickle history. Amma Asante‘s latest film “A United Kingdom” demonstrates once again how fighting for love can be a way to fight for country, freedom, and respect. The film follows Prince Seretse Khama of Botswana (David Oyelowo) who causes an international stir when he choose to Ruth Williams (Rosamund Pike), a white woman from London. Their interracial marriage sparked massive fury in both the apartheid government of South Africa and the public, and though the couple were exiled, they came back to politics and actively fought for independence, eventually becoming the first President and First Lady of Botswana. This is the third feature film from Amma Asante. She garnered quite a bit of acclaim for her 2013 film “Belle,” about a mixed-race daughter of a Royal Navy Admiral who is raised by her aristocratic great-uncle in 18th century England. Meanwhile, Oyelowo received widespread acclaim for his performance as Martin Luther King Jr. in “Selma,” as well as for his turns in “Lincoln,” “Interstellar,” and “A Most Violent Year.” Rosamund Pike received an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Amy Dunne in “Gone Girl”; she also starred opposite Pierce Brosnan in the James Bond film “Die Another Day” and co-starred in the Edgar Wright film “The World’s End.”

“A United Kingdom” will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. It will also be the opening film at the 60th London Film Festival, marking the second year in a row that a British film directed by a woman has featured as the opening night screening. It’s scheduled to be released wide in the UK on November 25th from 20th Century Fox.
