Beloved Indie Publicist Mickey Cottrell Needs Your Help

Beloved independent film publicist Mickey Cottrell is recovering from a serious injury — and now, those close to him are asking for assistance. Per a recently launched Go Fund Me campaign, the Inclusive PR head “has suffered a debilitating stroke and needs urgent help from his community of loved ones. He will require 24 hour care for the foreseeable future, and extensive physical therapy for a long time to come. He will not be able to garner any income during this time, and so we beseech you to help him through this difficult time.”

For decades, Cottrell has been a stalwart and reliable champion of up and coming films and talents. Over the last four decades of his life, Cottrell handled publicity for such films as “The Quiet American,” “Weekend,” “I Am Divine,” “Young @ Heart,” “Born to Fly: Elizabeth Streb Vs Gravity,” and many others. He has helped shepherd and introduce the careers of such directing talent as Percy Adlon, Phillip Noyce, Sophia Takal, Andrew Haigh, Jonathan Caouette, Wim Wenders, Gus Van Sant, Neil Young and many others. The publicist had a bit part in Van Sant’s “Drugstore Cowboy.” He also briefly appeared on episodes of “Star Trek: The Next Generation” and “Star Trek: Voyager.”

Cottrell was lovingly and memorably profiled by Ella Taylor for the LA Weekly a decade ago. Of Cottrell, Taylor wrote that he is “a renaissance publicist was born, as unlike the sleek new generation of professional PR smoothies as it’s possible to be.”

Cottrell himself also weighed in on his hopes for the future, telling Taylor that PR “would be even more fun if I didn’t have to make a living at it. I’ve always dreamed of the day I could afford to take out a full-page ad in Variety, requesting submissions for an absolutely free full Sundance PR campaign for one film I adore, one masterpiece to put all my efforts into and not represent the usual four films I’m paid to do.”
