Emilia Clarke Ditches the ‘Terminator’ Franchise — Was She Spooked By Terrible ‘Genesys’ Reviews?
In an apparent lesson on the key differences between a “genesis” and a “genisys,” the most recent “Terminator” movie didn’t end up being a new beginning. Critics panned it to the tune of a 26% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, stateside audiences didn’t exactly turn out in droves and Paramount pulled the sequels from its schedule indefinitely. Now it turns out that not even Emilia Clarke, who played Sarah Connor in the latest iteration of the sci-fi series created by James Cameron, isn’t into it.
“No,” the “Game of Thrones” star said bluntly when asked by ComingSoon.net whether she plans to reprise the role in future installments. “Can I say that? It’s okay. No. Uh-uh. But I have some very different roles coming up.”
Well, that settles that. And it’s almost certainly a good idea to move forward rather than go back in time with a series that hasn’t produced a good movie in 25 years. Clarke is still riding the critically acclaimed “Thrones” wave as Daenerys Targaryen, whose plot armor all but assures she’ll remain in a prominent role on the beloved HBO drama until its endgame. (It helps that she’s one of the show’s strongest characters.) She’ll next be seen in “Me Before You,” a romantic drama being released on June 3.
This doesn’t mean that “Terminator” is dead forever, of course — that’s almost definitionally impossible, given the nature of the time-traveling cyborg for which the franchise is named. “Genisys” made beaucoup bucks in China and, after enough time has passed, “Terminator” will almost certainly return from the past (or future).
