‘You’re the Worst’ Season 3: Edgar’s PTSD & ‘Loaded’ Love Language Take Center Stage
“A word like ‘love’ is very, very loaded,” Aya Cash said Tuesday morning.
Speaking from the Television Critics Association press tour stage, Cash was responding to a general, “What happens next?” query regarding Gretchen and Jimmy’s future on FXX’s “You’re the Worst.”
Season 3 is right around the corner, and fans are wondering how Jimmy’s fateful words (“I love you”) from the end of Season 2 will affect the commitment-phobic couple going forward.
“They would never do anything by the book,” Chris Geere (who plays Jimmy) added. “They take the hard route the whole time, and I think that’s why people can relate to them. It’s never as easy as romantic comedies have brain-washed us into believing they are.”
Creator Stephen Falk said it was important for him to introduce the couple in a fun, positive light right from the start of Season 3, noting how they came out of a “dark” season “fairly intact.”
Yet one of the bigger storylines of Season 3 will revolve around Edgar and how the war veteran will cope with his PTSD.
“We got away from it a little bit last season because I wanted him to have a life and get a girl and do all those fun things,” Falk said. “It was sort of nagging at me. Those kind of things don’t magically go away, so I felt a responsibility… If we were going to bring up combat issues back home, we couldn’t just let it drop. We had to deal with it in a real way. I felt this season was the right time, and we had a good story to tell.”
“Last season for Edgar was about him taking the plunge into actually transitioning into civilian-hood,” Desmin Borges added. “This season is really all about taking ownership of who you are and how you want the next phase of your life to be. Within the structural confines he finds himself in — the VA tells him what to do, his friends tell him what to do. They kind of bully him, and he says, ‘Stop that shit. I am a person.'”
Meanwhile, Lindsay (Kether Donohue) is dealing with her decision to restart her relationship with Paul (Allan McLeod).
“Paul and Lindsay represent the dark side of trying to make a relationship work when it’s past its expiration date,” Falk said. “It’s something in our nature that fixates on someone, for whatever reason. For this reason, it tends to be more about competition with her sister and living up to her mother’s high expectations.”
“I think Lindsay has a lot of rage that’s not properly placed,” Donohue added.
Falk also said the season would have at least one “really, really, really funny” guest star: Ben Folds. The musician gets professionally involved with Gretchen because there are “new clients to be had.”
“He plays a twisted version of Ben Folds,” Falk said.
“You’re the Worst” Season 3 premieres August 31 on FXX. Seasons 1 and 2 are streaming now on Hulu. Check out some first look photos below.
