‘Bill Nye: Science Guy’ Trailer: Everyone’s Favorite TV Scientist Takes Aim at Climate Change and Selfie Culture — Watch

Once a Science Guy, always a Science Guy.

"Bill Nye: Science Guy"

If you’re a member of a certain segment of the American population (yes, okay, Millennials, Gen Y, and the like), it’s likely that any affection you have for science was at least partially spawned by Bill Nye, the self-professed “science guy.” For many years, Nye’s infectious excitement for science was piped into schoolrooms across the country, aiming to make big questions seem fun and relatable and applicable to the everyday.

A few years on, and Nye is still bent on making people love science, or at least respect and understand it. In the new documentary, “Bill Nye: Science Guy,” everyone’s favorite TV scientist looks to the future, and a bleak one, if more people don’t start listening to what the world is trying to tell them. These days, Nye is mostly compelled by the issue of climate change, and driven to make a new audience — adults?! — invest in his message.

As we wrote in our SXSW review from earlier this year, “the latest from ‘The Immortalists’ duo David Alvarado and Jason Sussberg, isn’t as much about the man himself as it is the world that he feels still needs him. The main thrust of Alvarado and Sussberg’s documentary centers on the grey area of the current scientific landscape that Nye currently occupies. Verging on being pigeonholed as the designated explainer on issues ranging from global carbon dioxide levels to the basic validity of the scientific method, even Nye wrestles with the idea that, for some audiences, his continual involvement in certain debates with science skeptics might be counterproductive.”

Still, this new look at the film shows that Nye’s energy and passion hasn’t abated, even as the world has changed. But has his audience? And can his message resonate once again?

“Bill Nye: Science Guy” will screen at New York City’s Landmark Sunshine theater on Friday, October 27 before expanding to other markets.
