‘Parasite’ Is the First Foreign-Language Film to Win Best Cast SAG Award
Bong Joon Ho’s South Korean class thriller “Parasite” made Screen Actors Guild Award history Sunday when it won the prize for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. It’s the first foreign-language film ever to take home that award.
“Parasite” bested fellow Oscar Best Picture nominees “The Irishman,” “Jojo Rabbit,” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” at the SAG Awards, plus a fifth nominee, “Bombshell,” which is not up for the top Academy Award.
SAG winners often tend to do well at the Oscars, though last year the overlap didn’t happen as much as usual. Regina King, who won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “If Beale Street Could Talk,” wasn’t even in the running for a SAG Award. Emily Blunt, who won for her role in “A Quiet Place,” wasn’t nominated for the Oscar.
But Rami Malek went on to win at the Oscars for his role as Freddie Mercury in “Bohemian Rhapsody” after taking home a prize at last year’s SAG Awards, which exclusively honor individual, ensemble, and stunt performers in both TV and movies.
On Sunday, Joaquin Phoenix won the SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor for his role in “Joker” and Renée Zellweger won for Female Actor for “Judy.” They’re up for the Best Actor and Best Actress Oscar, respectively.
The supporting actor SAG Award went to Brad Pitt (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”) and the supporting actress trophy to Laura Dern (“Marriage Story”). Both are up for supporting role Oscars.
In his acceptance speech, Pitt addressed his fellow actors gathered at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.
“Each of us in this room, we know pain, we know loneliness, we bring that to the screen,” he said. “We know funny, and we bring that to the screen. Goddamn I think that’s a worthy endeavor.”
Among television nominees, three shows secured two wins each. From “Game of Thrones,” Peter Dinklage won for best supporting actor and the fantasy drama’s stunt ensemble took home a trophy for its work on the show’s final season.
Sam Rockwell and Michelle Williams won the top acting prizes for a TV movie or limited series for “Fosse/Verdon.”
The cast of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” won for best comedy ensemble and Tony Shalhoub won best actor in a comedy series.
