7 Films New to Netflix to Watch In November 2016, Including ‘Boyhood’ and ‘The Jungle Book’
Next month, Netflix has a wide variety of films — modern to classic, animated to live action, Oscar winners to romantic comedies — and we’ve picked seven that you should watch once they’re made available on the streaming service. Enjoy.
1. “Under the Sun” (available November 11)
Directed by Vitaly Manski, the documentary follows a year in the life of a family in Pyongyang, North Korea as their eight-year-old daughter, Zin-mi, prepares to join the Korean Children’s Union on the Day of the Shining Star.
2. “The Ivory Game” (available November 4)
Directed by Kief Davidson and Richard Ladkani and produced by Leonardo DiCaprio, the documentary sheds a light on the seedy underbelly of elephant poaching in Africa and black market ivory trading in China.
3. “Just Friends” (available November 14)
On a lighter note, who could forget a chubby Ryan Reynolds singing “I Swear” to his best friend? The 2005 rom-com stars Reynolds as a formerly overweight nerd, now a successful producer, who tries to reconnect with his high school crush, Jamie Palamino (Amy Smart), when he goes home for the holidays.
4. “Men Go to Battle” (available November 15)
Set in 1861, Zachary Treitz’s film tells the story of two brothers struggling to hold their crumbling estate together outside a small Kentucky town. The drama premiered at the 2015 Tribeca Film Festival and was well received by critics.
5. “Burn After Reading” (available November 16)
With an A-list cast including George Clooney, John Malkovich, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton, and Brad Pitt, the Joel and Ethan Coen black comedy is a must-watch. When a disc containing memoirs of a former CIA analyst (Malkovich) falls into the hands of Linda Litzke (McDormand) and Chad Feldheimer (Pitt), the two gym employees see a chance to make enough money for her to have life-changing cosmetic surgery.
6. “Boyhood” (available November 25)
Patricia Arquette took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in Richard Linklater’s drama that was nominated for a total of six Academy Awards. Filmed from 2002 to 2013, “Boyhood” chronicles the life of Mason Evans, Jr. (Ellar Coltrane) from ages six to eighteen as he grows up with divorced parents (Arquette and Ethan Hawke).
7. “The Jungle Book” (available November 30)
“Forget about your worries and your strifes” with Disney’s hit live-action and CGI remake of the 1967 animated film. Directed by Jon Favreau, Neel Sethi stars as Mowgli, a young boy who was raised by wolves. Bill Murray, Ben Kingsley, Idris Elba, Lupita Nyong’o and Scarlett Johansson co-star. The film became a box office success, grossing over $966 million worldwide.
