Emmys 2016 Nominations: ‘Game of Thrones,’ ‘Mr. Robot,’ ‘The Americans’ Get Major Nods
The critics spoke, and TV Academy members listened.
Two TV critic faves, “The Americans” and “Mr. Robot,” managed to break through and land Emmy nominations in the Outstanding Drama category this year, while the comedy category was also dominated by well-reviewed series, such as newcomer “Master of None.”
The Television Academy’s attempts in recent years to broaden its membership, expand categories and open up its voting process continues to pay off, as new blood managed to sneak into many of the major categories. Not only did “The Americans” and “Mr. Robot” break through on the series side, but several of the shows’ leads landed their first-ever Emmy acting nomination.
But many favorites also returned with a splash as well, including last year’s Outstanding Drama Series winner, “Game of Thrones.” The HBO juggernaut landed 23 nominations, the most of any program this year – and down just a tick from last year (24).
HBO retained its claim to the Emmy throne, leading all networks and outlets with 94 nominations (over 21 programs). The pay cable network remains buoyed by the strength of shows like “Game of Thrones,” “Veep,” “Silicon Valley” and “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.” But that’s down from 126 nods last year, and 99 nods in 2014.
FX flew to second place this year, with 56 nominations — a huge leap from 2015, when it scored 38. Not only was the basic cable network buoyed by Academy members’ sudden love of “The Americans” (with five noms), but as expected, limited series “The People vs. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story” (22 nominations) and “Fargo” (18 nominations) did extremely well, scoring the second- and third-highest nomination tallies (respectively) behind “Game of Thrones.”

Then there’s Netflix, which continues to see its Emmy nomination tally rise, with 54 nods this year (compared to 34 last year and 31 in 2014). Netflix was supported by the sheer volume of its programming, with 17 different programs all receiving nominations – including “House of Cards,” “Making a Murderer,” “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” and “What Happened, Miss Simone?”
Meanwhile, it was another tepid showing for the broadcast networks in the Emmy nomination tally. NBC scored the most, with 41, followed by ABC and CBS (35 each), Fox (29) and PBS (26). The CW, as usual, was a virtual no-show, with 5. The tally for all six broadcasters was 171, down from last year’s 190.
Other networks scoring double-digit nominations: AMC (24), Showtime (22), Comedy Central (17), Amazon (15), History (13), A&E (12).
Major networks that continue to be shut out include TNT. Thanks to “Mr. Robot,” USA Network scored six nominations — it hadn’t landed any in recent years. New channel Viceland is on the map with its first two nominations. And on the digital front, Sony’s Crackle, with three nods, beat out Hulu (two nods).

Simpson”), Tom Hiddleston (“The Night Manager”), Courtney B. Vance (“The People vs. O.J. Simpson”), Thomas Middleditch (“Silicon Valley”), Ellie Kemper (“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”) and Tracee Ellis Ross (“Black-ish”).
