When Patrick J. Adams first joined “Suits,” 100 episodes ago, he had a request: He wanted to direct. The USA Network show’s producers said sure — as long as “Suits” actually became a hit. Now, Adams has just helmed his fourth episode of “Suits” — and it happens to be the show’s landmark 100th episode, airing Wednesday night.
“This was something they were not going to let me do until the third or fourth season, when the show has really established itself,” Adams said. “If the show goes that long and I did a lot of shadowing of other directors, did my homework, they’d give me the opportunity.”
Adams directed an episode in the show’s fourth season and again in its fifth and sixth seasons. During this current seventh season, he asked for the shot at directing the 100th. “It was something I accidentally asked for, and it seemed like actually this might not be a bad thing and kind of appropriate for celebrating that milestone,” he said.
On “Suits,” Adam plays Mike Ross, a college dropout who winds up as the law associate and protege of Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht). Mike eventually becomes a bona fide lawyer and becomes a full-time part of Pearson Specter Litt, where other characters include partner Louis Litt (Rick Hoffman), executive assistant Donna Paulsen (Sarah Rafferty) and paralegal Rachel Zane (Meghan Markle).
“It’s so rare especially in the current landscape of television that a show can get to [100 episodes],” Adams said of the show’s popularity. “I think it’s something we’ll see a little bit less of. It feels really exciting to be on a show that manages to stay relevant and popular.”
Adams said directing the episode was “super surreal… as an actor, I was excited to stop and take a moment and thank everybody who has worked so hard to get us there. It was a real moment. But then, as the director I was looking at my watch and saying, ‘We’ve got work to do!'”
Adams and USA Network exclusively shared some photos from Adams’ turn behind the camera on the 100th episode:
“Suits” airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET on USA Network.
