Violent puppets, boisterous folk music and some even more boisterous horseback riding all make the monochromatic “Aferim!” look like a lot of fun. Written and directed by Romanian filmmaker Radu Jude, the Balkan take on the traditional Western is a contender in the 65th Berlin International Film Festival.
Set in 19th century, “Aferim!” (which translates to “Bravo!”) features a journey across Wallachia, as cheerful gendarme Costandin and his philosophical son’s misadventerous odyssey explores a parable-like look at late feudal Europe. “Aferim!” incorporates historical documents, folklore and well-loved songs for a finished product that’s at once traditional and wholly new. 
“Aferim!” is set to premiere on February 11, 2015 at the Berlin International Film Festival — check out the trailer below:
