While many still perceive video games as a trifling recreational activity, there are some who pursue it professionally, and even fewer can call themselves world champions. One of these people is Isaiah “Triforce” Johnson, a gamer living in Bed Stuy, Brooklyn, and the subject of Jack Schurman’s new short documentary “Triforce.” Schurman examines the Triforce’s life, who grew up running from arcade to arcade with his neighborhood friends trying to beat each other’s high score. The crew grew up to become world champions and formed a group called “Empire Arcadia,” led by Triforce. Now, in his thirties, Triforce muses on his childhood as a second generation immigrant, the triumphs and failures of his life, and what it’s like to pursue seemingly impossible dreams. Schurman is best known for his Emmy Award-winning short documentary “A Boy Helps A Town Heal,” the uplifting story of 14-year-old Jack Wellman of Newtown, Connecticut who led his elementary school wrestling team in the wake of the Sandy Hook Massacre. His debut feature film “Wild Hold” premiered at the Camden International Film Festival in 2014 where it won the Audience Award. It’s produced by Gabriel Garton, a regular contributing documentary film editor for TIME Magazine and Sports Illustrated.
