‘Game of Thrones’: Arya Became One of the Most Popular Baby Names in England Last Year

'Game of Thrones': Arya Now a Popular Baby Name in England

A girl has a name, and it’s Arya Stark of…England. BBC reports that more than 300 girls born in England and Wales last year carried the name of everyone’s favorite fictional assassin, and that was before she wiped out the entirety of House Frey. Indeed, there were more Aryas (302) than Marys (204) or Catherines (163).

Other names given a boost in popularity thanks to “Game of Thrones” in 2016: Khaleesi (69), Tyrion (11), Sansa (5), and Daenerys (4). That more children carry the Mother of Dragons’ royal title than her actual name is perhaps unsurprising, given how fun it is to say “Khaleesi” aloud; still, one wonders whether Dany’s all-in-the-family romantic entanglement will give any of those new parents pause.

A similar report came out last year revealing that, in the wake of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” many boys were named Kylo. Let’s hope that the most recent season of “Thrones” doesn’t lead to an uptick in boys being named Dickon.
