The latest feature film by acclaimed auteur Jonathan Nossiter (“Mondovino” and Sundance Grand Prize Winner “Sunday”), “Rio Sex Comedy,” will make its way to American audiences through an innovative distribution strategy with the company FilmBuff. The film will be made available on cable and broadband video-on-demand platforms starting August 30, which will be followed by a November 15 release on DVD.

Starring Bill Pullman, Charlotte Rampling, Irene Jacob, and Fisher Stevens, Rio Sex Comedy charts the misadventures of expatriates in Rio as they search for both personal pleasures and social justice. Each character reveals a different aspect of the fabled city, from Rio high society to favelas. The film premiered at 2010 Toronto International Film Festival. Journalists have hailed it as “a joyfully modern comedy” (Vogue) and “a moment of raucous delight” (Elle).

“Jonathan Nossiter has made a wonderful look at a legendary city, full of characters both diverse and universal,” said Matt Dentler, the head of content for FilmBuff. “We’re excited to work on the American release of Rio Sex Comedy, and we’re ready to take people to this amazing locale.”

“Given the radically shifting tides in international distribution, I’m thrilled by the opportunity to have the US premiere of my film in a new media exclusive,” says Nossiter. “The film was forged as a maverick project, so it’s appropriate that it will first reach US audiences through new bandwidths.”

“Rio Sex Comedy” will be available on all major cable providers (including Comcast, Time Warner, Cox, Verizon, etc.), under the “Movies On Demand” channel, starting August 30. At the same time, it will be available to rent or purchase on broadband platforms such as iTunes, Vudu, Xbox, Playstation, CinemaNow, and more. Other recent FilmBuff releases include For Lovers Only (by the Polish Brothers), Exit Through the Gift Shop (by Banksy), Armadillo (by Janus Metz), Nice Guy Johnny (by Edward Burns), and The Big Uneasy (by Harry Shearer).
