‘Portal’ Movie: J. J. Abrams Reveals Cult Video Game Adaptation Announcement is Imminent

The "Star Wars" director is having a meeting with Valve in the coming weeks.

Fans of the cult video games “Portal” and “Half-Life,” developed by Valve, can now rest assure knowing that their promised big screen adaptations are still in the works, thanks to J.J. Abrams. While no big announcements have yet been made about the movies, the “Star Works” helmer teased that the films are “still very much in development” and that an announcement about the “Portal” movie may be made soon.

“We have a meeting coming up next week with Valve, we’re very active, I’m hoping that there will be a ‘Portal’ announcement fairly soon”, Abrams told IGN at the “Westworld” red carpet.

The site also asked Abrams if the movies would be continuations of the stories told in the game. Not wanting to give anything away, he did say that he’s working with writers who really understand and will “get” the game and storylines.

“We are having some really interesting discussions with writers, many of whom…once you said you’re doing a movie or show about a specific thing that is a known quantity you start to find people who are rabid about these things,” he said. “As someone who loves playing ‘Half Life’ and ‘Portal,’ what’s the movie of this, it’s incredible when you talk to someone who just ‘gets’ it, it’s like, oh my god, it’s really the seed for this incredible tree you’re growing.”

It’s been three years since the two films were announced at the DICE Summit. Since then, a slew of video game movies have been announced and released including “Warcraft,” “Assassins Creed,” “Uncharted,” and “Sly Cooper” among others.
