James Franco‘s directorial career is about to get a huge boost thanks to “The Disaster Artist.” The movie earned rave reviews after its work-in-progress screening at SXSW in March and now it’s heading into awards season. Fresh off the movie’s official world premiere at TIFF last night, A24 has released the official trailer, and let’s just say the worst movie ever made has never looked so good.
The movie is a behind-the-scenes retelling of the making of “The Room,” the infamous Tommy Wiseau drama that is often called the “Citizen Kane” of bad movies. Franco stars as Wiseau opposite an ensemble cast that includes Dave Franco, Seth Rogen, Ari Graynor, Sharon Stone, and Hannibal Buress. The script was written by “500 Days of Summer” and “The Spectacular Now” duo Michael H. Weber and Scott Neustadter.
“The Disaster Artist” looks like a contemporary spin on “Ed Wood” and should prove to be Franco’s biggest hit to date as a director. A24 will be releasing the movie December 1, which means a possible awards campaign seems very likely.
