Watch: Chow Down on the Hilariously Deranged First 'Sausage Party' Trailer

Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg had a very, very big day yesterday at SXSW, debuting both their “Preacher” TV pilot and a work-in-progress cut of their raunchy animated feature film “Sausage Party.” Billed as the first R-rated CG animated movie, the film “is about one sausage leading a group of supermarket products on a quest to discover the truth about their existence and what really happens when they become chosen to leave the grocery store.” The film features the voice contributions of a number of huge comedic stars, including Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Jonah Hill, Bill Hader, Michael Cera, James Franco, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, Paul Rudd, Nick Kroll, David Krumholtz, Edward Norton and Salma Hayek.

The film’s first trailer has arrived on the heels of what sounds like a particularly raucous showing of the film (any event that involves Rogen expounding on the MPAA rating bestowed on features that see “food fuck” must automatically be deemed “raucous,” them’s the rules), and it’s a wild and deranged mix of food puns and snappy send-ups of well-loved cinematic tropes. It looks hilarious.

Of the work-in-progress cut, our own Eric Kohn wrote that the film “plays out like ‘Toy Story’ by way of alt-comics icon Robert Crumb, which is just as ridiculous as it sounds. Even in the wildly unfinished version that premiered at the 2016 SXSW Film Festival, the August 12 release is subversive comedy gold.”
