Damien Chazelle‘s debut film “Whiplash” follows Andrew Neiman (Miles Teller), a promising 19-year-old drummer at a cutthroat Manhattan music conservatory. A feature-length reprise of Chazelle’s award-winning short of the same name, the film premiered at Sundance and also screened at the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight. It stars the always-impressive Miles Teller (“Rabbit Hole,” “The Spectacular”) as the struggling protagonist and J.K Simmons as fearsome maestro of jazz Terence Fletcher, who crudely abuses and assaults his students.
In the trailer, just released today, Fletcher can be seen calling out Neiman for “rushing” and being one of those “single tear people” and a “worthless pansy-ass.” In our review of the film from Sundance, Emma Myers wrote, “Revealing both the dangers and payoffs of artistic ambition, “Whiplash” is sure to establish Chazelle as a directorial force to be reckoned with.”
Also starring Melissa Benoist, Austin Stowell, Jayson Blair, and Kavita Patil, “Whiplash” is scheduled to be screened in the Special Presentations section of the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival and opens in theaters on October 10th.
