Watch: Andrew Scott Acts Against His ‘Sherlock’ Type In Emotional Clip from ‘Pride’
To “Sherlock” viewers, Andrew Scott‘s face is a familiar one. He plays central villain Moriarty on the BBC detective drama, and he is the perfect bad guy — stoking viewers’ anger and irritation with his unique brand of condescending histrionics. Scott is due to appear in forthcoming UK drama “Pride,” and (not to be typecast) the actor will be performing in a very different role.

“Pride” tells the story of an LGBT activist group denied from donating money to the National Union of Mineworkers. The film is set in the aftermath of the UK miners’ strike of 1984. The LGBT activist group, insistent on helping, decides to reach out directly to a small mining village in Wales, and the two communities — the town and the activists — come together.
In this clip, Andrew Scott’s character (bookstore owner Gethin) expresses pride over being a gay Welshman, but he also reveals that he has become estranged from his mother because he is gay. The role will likely feel like a departure for those expecting the nefarious Moriarty. Where in “Sherlock,” Scott’s performance is fixed in one register (pure eeevil), this scene allows him to show more range: from jolly life-of-the-party to subtle melancholy.
