Once described by fellow thespian Ethan Hawke as “the only actor since Marlon Brando that’s actually done anything new with the art of acting,” Nicolas Cage‘s movies don’t always live up his talent. 2014’s “Joe” was a recent standout, while both Cage and writer/director Paul Schrader disavowed “Dying of the Light” after studio meddling. The actor will soon be seen in this summer’s “USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage,” which just premiered its first trailer with Variety.

Cage plays Captain Charles Butler McVay in the historical drama, which dramatizes the destroyed sinking battleship of the title. Said vessel was torpedoed by an Imperial Japanese Navy submarine on July 30, 1945, shortly after delivering parts for the first atomic bomb; it’s considered one of the worst naval disasters in American history. Hope is scarce in the trailer, but sharks abound.

Tom Sizemore and Thomas Jane co-star alongside Cage in the film, which Mario van Peebles helmed. Van Peebles first came to national attention for directing “New Jack City” and has been active both onscreen and behind the camera on television of late. “USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage” sails into theaters on June 19.
