A reboot of the 1980’s sci-fi film “WarGames” has been in the works for some time, garnering a mixed reaction from fans who either want to see a modern iteration of the property or want the original film left alone. However, the reboot just announced by MGM will not be a feature film, but a short interactive film that allows viewers to make decisions that affect the story.

The original film starred Matthew Broderick as a young computer hacker who accidentally gets access to a top secret government supercomputer. He thinks he’s gotten access to a new video game, but in fact the actions in the “game” he’s playing have real life consequences that could lead the country into a nuclear war.

The reboot will be created by Interlude, an interactive media and technology company that is developing new media technologies that change according to the viewer’s decisions or interests. The viewer will be able to participate in the short film in a sense, influencing the dialogue and story like a video game. This technology sounds like an exciting new story experience, and “WarGames” sounds like a great property for an experiment with new media.
