The Toronto International Film Festival is winding now, and with it, a much clearer sense of Oscar season. While movies like “A Star is Born” launched in Venice, they faced even greater scrutiny at TIFF, where discerning media had a chance to evaluate heavy-hitting fall titles in the midst of a very crowded lineup. Meanwhile, some of the world premieres at TIFF also left a mark, such as Steve McQueen’s “Widows” and Barry Jenkins’ “If Beale Street Could Talk,” and Alfonso Cuaron’s “Roma” continues to be a critical favorite.

In other words, it’s a dense year, and nobody should be making definitive calls about awards contenders. In this week’s Screen Talk, Eric Kohn and Anne Thompson discuss the range of fall movies on display and evaluate how various responses have impacted the next stage of the season.
