Watch: Ewan McGregor is Jesus and the Devil in ‘Last Days in the Desert’ Trailer

Emmanuel Lubezki has won the Oscar for Best Cinematography for three years running now (“Gravity,” “Birdman” and “The Revenant”), and it doesn’t look like the visionary DP is slowing down any time soon in 2016. He’s already received a ton of acclaim for his work on Terrence Malick’s Hollywood odyssey “Knight of Cups,” and his next feature, “Last Days in the Desert,” has the kind of ambitious scope and breathtaking visual landscapes that keep earning the cinematographer trophy after trophy. Always one to document his experiences on set via Instagram, Lubezki has begun posting a series of set photos from “Last Days” that is absolutely breathtaking.

Directed by “Albert Nobbs” helmer Rodrigo Garcia, “Last Days” follows Jesus (played by Ewen McGregor) in an imagined chapter from his 40 days of fasting and praying in the desert. On his way out of the wilderness, he struggles with the Devil (also played by McGregor) over the fate of an ordinary family in crisis. Tye Sheridan and Ciaran Hinds co-star in the drama, which first premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival and is set for release on May 13, courtesy of Broad Green Pictures.

The movie was shot at Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in the Colorado Desert of Southern California for five weeks, and Lubezki’s behind-the-scenes photos capture the stirring beauty of the film’s setting. Check out the pictures currently available online, and be sure to follow Lubezki on Instagram  as he continues to release set photos leading up to the movie’s release.
