Venice 2013: A Guide To All The Films
The lineup for the 70th Venice Film Festival has been unveiled, with new films from James Franco, Stephen Frears, Terry Gilliam, Hayao Miyazaki, David Gordon Green, Kelly Reichardt, Xavier Dolan, Jonathan Glazer, Amos Gatai and Errol Morris all screening in competition.
As previously announced, Alfonso Cuaron’s “Gravity” will open the festival out of competition on August 28th, joining other out-of-comp titles like Paul Schrader’s “The Canyons,” Greg McLean’s “Wolf Creek 2,” Steven Knight’s “Locke,” and last year’s Golden Lion winner Kim Ki-duk and his “Moebius.”
So far 19 films have been announced to compete for this year’s Golden Lion, including Stephen Frears’s Judi Dench starrer “Philomena” (picked up by The Weinstein Company earlier this year as an Oscar hopeful), David Gordon Green’s “Joe,” which stars Nicolas Cage, “Night Moves,” Kelly Reichardt’s follow up to Venice alum “Meek’s Cutoff” starring Jesse Eisenberg, Peter Sarsgaard and Dakota Fanning, Quebecois filmmaker Xavier Dolan’s “Tom at the Farm” (his first film not to debut at Cannes), “Tracks,” the latest from John Curran, starring Mia Wasikowska and Adam Driver, Japanese animation master Hayao Miyazaki with “The Wind Rises,” Jonathan Glazer’s first film in nine years, “Under The Skin,” and Terry Gilliam’s “The Zero Theorem” starring Christoph Waltz alongside Tilda Swinton, Ben Whishaw, and David Thewlis.
James Franco will rather remarkably see his third directorial effort of 2013 make a major festival debut (after “Interior. Leather Bar” at Sundance and “As I Lay Dying” in Cannes) with the Cormac McCarthy adaptation “Child of God,” starring Franco himself (of course) alongside Tim Blake Nelson in the story of a loner moves to the mountains of Tennessee and lives in a cave.
Franco will also star in Gia Coppola’s “Palo Alto,” an adaptation of Franco’s short story which also stars Emma Roberts and Val Kilmer. It’s screening in Venice’s Horizons sidebar.
As far as documentaries go, Errol Morris’ “The Unknown Known: the Life and Times of Donald Rumsfeld” will screen in competition, while new titles from Alex Gibney (Lance Armstrong take “The Armstrong Lie”) and Frederick Wiseman (“At Berkeley”) will screen out of competition.
Notable titles not included were Paul Greengrass’s “Captain Phillips,” Ridley Scott’s “The Counselor,” Spike Jonze’s “Her,” Terrence Malick’s “Knight of Cups,” Anton Corbijn’s “A Most Wanted Man,” Lars Von Trier’s “Nymphomaniac,” Spike Lee’s “Oldboy,” Martin Scorcese’s “The Wolf of Wall Street,” and a slew of titles that are set for world premieres in Toronto instead, including Steve McQueen’s “12 Years a Slave.”
