The Criterion Collection is adding new titles to its iconic library this December, most excitingly Todd Haynes‘ 1995 psychological thriller “Safe.” Starring an unforgettable Julianne Moore as Carol White as a South Carolina housewife who begins to develop a mysterious illness, the disturbing suburban drama is a provocative dissection of American consumerism, health crises and social estrangement. “Safe” represents Haynes’ first entry in the Criterion Collection, and the film will be released with a new 4k digital restoration and bonus audio commentary from Haynes, Moore and producer Christine Vachon.

Additionally, Criterion’s Eclipse program, which draws attention to less widely known cinema from internationally renowned Japanese directors, will showcase the first five works of Keisuke Kinoshita, including “Port of Flowers,” “The Living Magoroku, “Jubilation Street,” “Army” and “Morning for the Osone Family.” According to Criterion, “The fascinating titles in this new series show the artistic blossoming of a young filmmaker who made lyrical, humane work within the constraints of a wartime film industry obliged to include propagandistic messages in its output. These rarely screened films have never before been on DVD in the U.S.”
