Even for a show based on a hit indie movie, “Dear White People” was still one of last year’s best Netflix surprises. While the first 10 episodes of the show followed some of the same story ideas that the film did, the stage was set for “Dear White People” Season 2 to venture into some uncharted territory.

Netflix just released the first look at the upcoming Season 2, which looks like it picks up largely where the first left off. In the wake of a season-ending student protest lead by Sam White (Logan Browning) that also saw Troy (Brandon P. Bell) getting arrested, there’s plenty of questions about what came next. From the looks of things, Sam still seems torn between her different feelings for Reggie (Marque Richardson) and Gabe (John Patrick Amedori), as the latter’s new film about race threatens to make things even more complicated.

A few other students from Winchester University look like they’re back to figuring right into the heart things at school, including Coco (Antoinette Robertson) and Lionel (DeRon Horton), who seems to have found some romance all his own.

As Sam faces down challenges from social media and seminars alike, it looks like the show’s in for another semester-long balancing act between attraction and activism. And to cap it all off, this look at Season 2 also closes with a stellar list of character nicknames that don’t pull any punches. (Mark us down for at least one “Agatha Shifty” t-shirt.)

“Dear White People” Season 2 hits Netflix Friday, May 4. Watch the first-look trailer below:
