A new teaser for Paramount Pictures‘ “Ghost in the Shell” has some super short clips of a dazzling fight scene in which Scarlett Johansson emerges out of thin air much like the monster in “Predator.” The action-thriller is based on Masamune Shirow’s manga series of the same name.
Johansson plays Major, a special ops human-cyborg leading the elite task force known as Section 9 in their mission of stopping the world’s most dangerous criminals. Due out next year, “Ghost in the Shell” has been pushing forward with an aggressive marketing campaign since a controversy erupted over Johansson being cast in the lead role in April. Fans accused the filmmakers of contributing further to Hollywood’s pattern of whitewashing.
Speaking on the subject of the controversy in July, producer Steve Paul told fans, “There [are] all sorts of people and nationalities in the world in ‘Ghost in the Shell.’ We’re utilizing people from all over the world…There’s Japanese in it. There’s Chinese in it. There’s English in it. There’s Americans in it.”
“Ghost in the Shell” is being directed by Rupert Sanders, who previously directed “Snow White and the Huntsman.” Paramount is releasing the film in theaters on March 31, 2017. Check out the latest teaser below:
